Dean Message:

 The Faculty of Agriculture is one of the Key units of Sheikh Zayed University, dedicated to advancing agricultural development through training, knowledge generation and service delivery in Afghanistan and in the region. We are proud to be one of the premier Agricultural Faculty in South-East region of the country which has contributed to Human capacity development and Agricultural Technology Generation in South-East region of Afghanistan. We have done this through promotion of staff talent, improved teaching and enhancement of research and outreach facilities.

The goal of the Faculty is to " Develop Intellectual capacity of students/scientists and equip them with the knowledge, practical skills and attitudes to positively influence sustainable agricultural development, nature conservation and judicious utilization of environmental resources ".

Since the establishment of our Faculty in 2002, the Faculty has taken on the responsibility of conducting research in various fields of agriculture, offering high-quality programs, providing the country with qualified graduates, and establishing effective relationships with the public and private sectors.

The Faculty of Agricultural is like no other faculty at the Sheikh Zayed University, as much for the wide breadth of our research and academic offerings as for our trans disciplinary programs.

We are a science-based faculty that is uniquely positioned in that our Lecturers and students draw from the natural sciences, the social sciences and the arts and humanities to seek comprehensive solutions to some of the key challenges facing to our province and to the whole country today. For example the misusing of natural resources, environmental issue and soil erosion in Khost province as well as in the whole country.

As Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, I want you to know that we are working hard to achieve these goals and to improve the Afghan-agricultural sector. I am very proud to announce that 90% of our graduates are employed in the Afghanistan agricultural sector in governmental and semi-governmental bodies, NGOs, and the private sectors.

As Dean, I am very proud of the Faculty, its members, staff, students and all that they have accomplished.
I look forward to continuing to work with them and all our stakeholders as we strive to continue to dare to make a world of difference.

Abdul Khalil Afghani
Dean

Department of Agronomy

Agronomyis the science of utilizing plants for food, fuel, feed, and fiber. To do this effectively and in a sustainable manner, agronomy encompasses work in the areas of plant genetics, plant physiology, meteorology, and soil science. Agronomy is the application of a combination of sciences like biology, chemistry, ecology, earth science, and genetics. Agronomists today are involved with many issues including producing food, creating healthier food, managing environmental impacts, and creating energy from plants. Agronomists often specialize in areas such as crop rotation, irrigation and drainage, plant breeding, soil classification, soil fertility, weed control, insect and pest control and other areas.

In order to make effective contributions to the achievement of the Faculty philosophies and objectives, the Department will undertake practical training in Crop Breeding: Land Evaluation and Management for optimal Crop Production.

The specific objectives are:

  1. to impart on students the basic principles of crop production and crop breeding;
  2. to organize farm trials of variety of crops for methods and result-oriented demonstration purposes;
  3. to organize farm practical whereby students will manage farm production on their own fields;
  4. to actualize the practice of land evaluation and management; and
  5. To provide professional advice to farmers.

Department of Plant Protection

In order to make effective contributions to the achievement of the Faculty philosophies and objectives, the Department will:

  1. Undertake practical training in various aspects of Plant  Protection techniques;
  2. Impart on students the basic principles of Plant Protection through practical demonstration on the field;
  3. Provide professional advice to farmers;

Department of Animal Science.

Animal husbandry, also called animal science, stockbreeding or simple husbandry, is the agricultural practice of breeding and raising livestock.

The science of animal husbandry is taught in many universities and colleges around the world. Students of animal science may pursue degrees in veterinary medicine following graduation, or go on to pursue master's degrees or doctorates in disciplines such as nutrition, genetics and breeding, or reproductive physiology. Graduates of these programs may be found working in the veterinary and human pharmaceutical industries, the livestock and pet supply and feed industries, or in academia.

Historically, certain sub-professions within the field of animal husbandry are specifically named according to the animals that are cared for.

In line with the general philosophies of the Faculty for the Bachelor of Agriculture Programme, the Department will:

  1. Impart on students knowledge of basic principles of Animal Nutrition, Breeding, Health, Animal Products and Procession;
  2. Expose students to practical animal keeping.
  3. Look into cheaper and alternative means for animal production with a view to increasing availability of cheap sources of animal protein.
